His story highlights the transformative power of the Dharma on his character and health.

Introduction and Journey to Buddhism

Mr. Dao Thanh Hoa, Dharma name Phuoc Hao, born in 1950, residing in Ward 15, Go Vap District, Ho Chi Minh City, encountered Venerable Master Thich Thong Lac's teachings in 2015. Prior to this, he had followed the Pure Land school for some time. He found immense peace and comfort in his mind after embracing the Dharma.

Character Transformation Through Buddhism

Before knowing the Dharma, Mr. Hoa had a quick temper and found it difficult to control his emotions. Through studying and practicing according to the Venerable Master's teachings, his temperament gradually became calmer, and he was no longer easily angered.

Difficulties Visiting Chan Nhu Monastery

Mr. Hoa often wished to visit the monastery but faced difficulties with travel and finding companions, especially living in an area with many Christian residents. It was only recently that he had the affinity to visit the monastery.

Impressions of Venerable Master Thich Thong Lac's Books and Teachings

Mr. Hoa found the Venerable Master's books and teachings very easy to understand and deeply touching. He particularly remembers the teachings on human ethics and the virtue of loving for all beings (respect for life/do no harm).

Influence of Master Thich Mat Hanh

Mr. Hoa was impressed by Master Thich Mat Hanh's straightforwardness, quick wit, and diligent, farmer-like work ethic. The Master often reminded everyone to uphold the virtue of hiếu sinh, avoid killing, and limit meat consumption.

Benefits of Long-Term Vegetarianism

Mr. Hoa has been a strict vegetarian for 16 years and has experienced numerous benefits, such as less worry about food, saving time on cooking, saving money, feeling lighter in his stomach, being healthier, and getting sick less often.

Practicing the Five Precepts

Mr. Hoa shared that he hasn't been able to perfectly uphold the Five Precepts (Do not kill living beings, do not steal, do not commit adultery, do not lie - speak harsh words, do not drink alcohol – stimulants), especially the precept against lying. Sometimes, he has to lie to avoid lending money or to prevent financial loss. He emphasized that love for all living beings is the most important virtue, feeling compassion when he sees living beings being killed and striving to limit the use of living things in his household.

Healing diseases by The Right method of directing the mind (Directing the mind to another form/state, then the present unwholesome form/state will be destroyed).

Previously, Mr. Hoa suffered from many ailments, including colitis, acid reflux, and fungal skin infections. By practicing the right method of mindfulness, according to the Venerable Master's teachings for nearly 9 months, these illnesses were cured. He would often practice (the right method of mindfulness) at 4 AM and during his free time, repeatedly affirming phrases like: "This illness is karmic, this body is a karmic body. This karmic illness and karmic body, depart from me now; this is not my body, nor is it my illness."

Observing Karma in the Surroundings

Mr. Hoa observed that people in his neighborhood who frequently killed animals often faced difficulties at the time of death, or their family members struggled to close their eyes.

Continued Learning and Spreading the Right Dharma

Mr. Hoa regularly continues to study the Venerable Master's lectures online, including the Eight Precepts

1. Do not kill

2. Do not steal

3. Do not commit adultery

4. Do not lie

5. Do not drink alcohol

6. Do not wear makeup, perfume, dance, or watch dances

7. Do not lie or sit on a high, wide, and beautiful bed

8. Do not eat past noon

He has noticed that the Dharma helps him avoid scolding his grandchildren or feeling angry when others are upset.

Advice to Everyone

Mr. Hoa advises everyone to learn about the Right Dharma, try vegetarianism or limit meat consumption, and study the Right Dharma to reduce anger and delusion, which helps create a peaceful family life and spread the authentic Buddhist teachings to others.
